The world’s largest biometric ID system, Aadhar is a 12 digit unique identity number which is assigned to the residents of India on voluntary basis. The Aadhar number is based on the biometric and demographic data of the individuals.
This data is collected by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), an authority established under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Electronic and Information Technology in January 2009.
Indian residents irrespective of their age and gender can voluntarily enroll for an Aadhar card for which they need to provide minimal demographic and biometric information which is free of cost.
Demographic information that needs to be shared includes name, date of birth or age (verified), gender, address, mobile number, and email id.
The biometric information required to be shared includes ten fingerprints, two iris scans and facial photograph.
Aadhar Card Eligibility
All the residents of India from newborn to adults are eligible for Aadhar card. For children below the age of 5 years Baal Aadhar is issued.
If an NRI or a foreigner stays in India for more than 12 months, he/she is eligible for an Aadhar Card.
It is also being proposed that NRIs with Indian Passports can get Aadhar Card after arrival in India without waiting for 180 days.
Documents required for Aadhar enrolment
The applicant needs to submit either a Proof of Address or a Proof of Identity for Aadhar enrolment and application.
As a Proof of Identity you can submit your PAN Card or Birth Certificate.
Whereas, as a Proof of Address you can submit any of the following four document- Passport, Ration/PSD Card, Voter Id Card, or Driving License.
Procedure to enroll for Aadhar
In order for adults to enroll for Aadhar, they need to follow a set of simple steps which are as follows:
- Visit the official UIDAI website and look for the Aadhar enrolment centre near you.
- Fill the enrolment form with your details.
- Submit the required documents.
- Provide biometrics.
- Collect enrolment acknowledge slip.
Uses of Aadhar Card
- Identity Card: Aadhar card can be used as an identity card issued by the government which is universally acceptable, for a number of services. It can be used as a proof of address, and age when applying for any services offered by the government.
- Availing Subsidies: The important use of aadhar card is that it can be used to avail government subsidies. The government already has all the required information about an individual and hence for availing the subsidy one needs to present only the aadhar card.
- Passport Acquisition: The process of acquiring a passport has become less tedious with the issue of aadhar card. Earlier this process used to take a lot of time. However, now, if you wish to have a passport you can produce aadhar card as a proof of identity and address while applying online for the passport.
- Opening Bank Accounts: Aadhar Card comes handy when an individual wants to open a bank account. Banks and financial institutions consider aadhar as a single valid proof of address and photo identity while opening bank account.
- Jan Dhan Yojana: For opening a bank account under Jan Dhan Yojana, you need to produce only the aadhar card. This scheme was started to make banking services available for people living in remote and rural areas.
- Digital Life Certificate: The concerned agencies can now digitally access the information of the pensioners and hence the senior people entitled for pension need not leave there home and be physically present to receive pension.
- For disbursing PF: Linking the aadhar card to the pension account gives the benefit of direct disbursement of provident fund to the bank account of individuals.
- LPG Subsidy: Users can avail the LPG subsidy directly to their bank account by linking their aadhar number with their 17 digit LPG ID.
